Ahhhh.... lefts.

No mosquitoes, no rashes, key hole paddle out, spongie reef, breaks on all swells and tides.

Roberto Duran surfing in Panama

Walking around South Beach before our flight to Panama my friend Juan sees Roberto Duran cruise by in a convertable and screams 'El campion, el campion!' Juan has his camera out and starts snapping photos, and begs Duran to pose for some shots. Duran agrees and ends up parking, taking off his shirt, flexing- still acting every bit the champ. He joins us at a cafe with his entourage for drinks and graciously answers all of Juan's questions. My spanish is worthless so Duran's nephews talk to me about architecture. I am surfing 'lin'ers days later.

Carving a mailbox holder

This has been in the works for a couple of months and I am hoping to be done this week. I made one years ago and have thought of ways to tweak it... always something different to try.

Embracing risk

As I was sitting there listening to the speaker talk about managing change in our lives I kept thinking about an article I read on embracing risk.

I do not know what this woman was thinking.

surf & adventure tee

Rob at Surf and Adventure took the Little Island pier sketch and got some new tee's made! Worrell over at OSB did the screen printing and they turned out great (in my biased opinion). Get them while you can.

sclupture ideas

Sometimes I'll stare at the wood until something pops out and then do some sketches to work it out. This eventually became the guitar player. I cut his legs off later because I didn't like the way they looked. He hangs out in a corner of my porch now.

I saw a painting of a surfer in a lineup sitting and waiting and thought it would look really cool to have a sculpture of that out in my yard or to place in field or on a beach staring off into the distance, sitting, waiting... all sorts of interpretations. So far just the sketch has made it.

S&A poster

While I worked at Surf and Adventure we did a couple of events at the Ted Constant center. We would bring in a 5' half pipe, quarters, boxes, rails a booth and rope off an area from the other vendors. A couple guys would get stuck on the half helping kids learn to fakie and were cooked by the end of the day. Ken and the Billabong crew would get everyone hopped up on Monster energy drinks and the crowd would scream for free t-shirts and beanies. These pic's were made into a poster promoting our surf camps that hung along the stadium inside.

three heads and potion

I come across stuff in my sketchbook and can't remember for the life of me what the meaning behind them is or was or where they came from. The three headed guy may have just been for fun, or I was trying to figure out something I saw or a carving, who knows. The potion I remember had a specific meaning behind the letters on the bottles... but, I didn't write down what they were and all the lead up sketches and doodles don't make any sense. My initial guess is Virginia and Sandbridge.
Your interpretations are welcomed!

Little Island pier and Coast Guard house

Surf & Adventure Rob asked for a sketch of the Little Island pier yesterday. I went down this morning and knocked this out... surf is pretty good, really good actually, but I didn't have the time to get out there. Went over and figured I'd draw the old Coast Guard house while I was at it.

sketch book

I'm working on a color by numbers collection of surf themed pictures (for kids of all ages) and came across this Rapa Nui head in my sketch book

Mermaid blowing a sailboat

Drew this thinking about how to make it work on a piece of wood. It did work and looked cool, but I broke a Roto-zip in the process.

some stuff from the 90's

I did a bunch of these trophies for 17th St. surf shop when they still put on the Billabong Surf Series. Igor was working in the offices at the time and hooked me into a few nice jobs with them. He is now the go to guy for pin-striping and cool art... check him out at Igor's Custom

Made from local pawlonia. Such nice wood to work with.

Twisted piece of pine.

An emc t-shirt. My buddy Jared named him the starving artist.

bamboo masks

A few     years ago I got some bamboo and made masks... these were the sketches preceding the grinder, dremel and chisel work. The carving always takes me longer then I think.

sketch book

I've got loads of sketch books filled with waves and surfers and ideas and thoughts and mostly repeating themes that I am trying to perfect. I am going through them pulling a few things to post while I finish the wood paddle and begin a tiki mail box holder.

Outrigger paddlers

I used to paddle outrigger each summer with group in Sandbridge headed up by the Barton brothers. We would go to Gloucester, MA and paddle around Cape Ann in the Blackburn Challenge, we did a July 4th race in NYC paddling around the statue of Liberty and Brooklyn bridge dodging ships and ferries and would hold annual races in Va. Beach; a few times it coinciding with the ECSC. The Barton's still do an end of summer paddle from Sandbridge to Rodanthe.

Cross country bicycle trip

The hostel in San Francisco was packed so I rode across the bridge to the Sausalito side and stayed there for a few days. I went out to Muir woods and stood beneath those huge beautiful trees. I rode back into the city a few times and drew these.

Cross country bicycle trip

I stayed in Santa Cruz for two days. By this time I had put in nearly 5000 miles and was cooked. I was at the end of my trip and wanted to see the redwood trees in Muir woods north of San Francisco.
